Happy Valentine’s Day
Pilates & Cycling for Two

Consider a gift for yourself and a loved one this Valentine's Day: Pilates & Cycling for Two at CoreFocused in Hollis, NH. "Getting fit together as a couple has become very popular." states, Jody Secules, owner of CoreFocused. Visit www.corefocused.com for more information and online scheduling or phone: 603-554-7522.

What does being “fit” mean?

According to Oxford Dictionaries online, fit as an adjective has several qualities:

• having the requisite qualities or skills to undertake something competently
• informal: ready
• in good health, especially because of regular exercise
• British informal: sexually attractive; good looking: who’s this fit babe?

CoreFocused, LLC, of Hollis, NH, is a Pilates & Cycling studio geared towards personalized training of 1 or 2 students at a time. Weekly students of CoreFocused experience many of the above qualities of the word “fit”. Pilates and Cycling students of CoreFocused state that their bodies support them better in their daily life with less or no pain, as compared to their condition before starting a fitness plan at CoreFocused. By learning optimal body mechanics through Pilates exercise, they can enjoy activities & sports again about which they thought they would only be able to reminisce. The pleasure of the moment can be enjoyed through Pilates and cycling as the mind-body connection and the breath work relieve the body & mind of stress. Students have exclaimed they haven’t felt this good since childhood. Living in the present moment is a peaceful, energizing, stress-relieving state that is healthy for the student on a cellular level and also for the community on a social level. Joseph Pilates, the turn of the 20th century creator of the exercise method, believed that if everyone practiced his exercise method, the world would be a better place.

A regular practice of Pilates exercises promotes a sense of peaceful readiness, knowing that you have the capacity to handle life’s challenges. There is something magical and magnificent that happens when your body’s alignment improves through the biomechanics of Pilates and a re-awakening (or perhaps initial establishment) of pathways of energy in the body. One student expresses what many have experienced, “Pilates exercises have helped me strengthen muscles I didn’t even know I had.” Many of us live day to day using only the major muscle groups, leaving many other muscles to wither through neglect. Today’s life style involves a lot of sitting and promotes holding patterns in our hips and lower backs that are not beneficial to body, mind or spirit. Pilates is the antidote to “our civilized life-style”. Pilates exercises challenge students in multiple planes & directions to focus on and use their neglected, seldom used core muscles in a progressive building block method which assists them in becoming “un-stuck”. As a result, they feel remarkably better and have greater range of motion and less or no pain. Feeling good then translates to looking good & feeling strong and exhibiting a shining happiness which is attractive in social & a sensual sense. As the Oxford dictionary asks: who’s this fit babe?

“Getting fit as a couple has become very popular. It’s a great way to spend time with someone you love,” says Jody Secules, owner of CoreFocused. Pilates on Tour® - New York

Jody Secules, owner of CoreFocused, attended a three-day Pilates conference in New York City on September 16-18. During this conference she had the opportunity to learn from second generation Master Pilates instructors. Jody attended a full day and a half with Madeline Black on two topics,"Using Muscle Energy Technique with Pilates" and "Lighten Up: Decompressing the Hips, Pelvis and Lumbar Spine. Elizabeth Larkam shared her vast knowledge on the topic of "Pilates Post-rehabilitation Programs for Hip and Knee Replacement. Karen Clippinger spoke and led exercises focused on Sacroiliac Function. Wendy LeBlanc-Arbuckle led a workshop on "A Conversation with your Psoas: Cultivating Abdominal/Psoas/Diaphragm Balance." Jody also enjoyed starting each conference day with an hour workout; Friday with Nora St. John and the Pilates Arc, and Saturday and Sunday with Valentin on the Chair and Reformer. Balanced Body facilitates a top notch, high caliber learning experience in their multi-day Pilates on Tour conference format. The student to teacher ratio is typically no more than about 36 to 1 and the instructors are the best in their fields with over 25 to over 50 years experience, mainly first and second generation Master Pilates instructors, including Distinguished Elders Lolita San Miguel and Mary Bowen.

Anatomy Trains®

This month Jody Secules, owner of CoreFocused in Hollis, NH, enjoyed attending an Anatomy Trains® Myofascial Meridians workshop. The three-day workshop introduced Thomas Myers' revolutionary, holistic view of anatomy. Moving from the Renaissance and still persisting today, anatomy books depict individual and opposing muscle groups. We are so much more than the sum of these isolated parts. Anatomy Trains views the fascia that surrounds our muscles and connects our individual muscles as an integral part of the human form. Fascia that holds us together can be viewed as a tensegrity structure: forces are distributed throughout the body rather than isolated. For example the pain in your shoulder may actually originate dysfunctionally in your opposite leg along one of the spiral lines of the body.

The Anatomy Trains workshop gave me new tools in postural analysis and Pilates programming. The workshop confirmed my belief that we are the product of our movement patterns which affects our fascia and form. Pilates is a multi-planar exercise discipline that addresses both sides of the body and multi angles of movement and force, countering our sometimes one-sided or planar movement in our day. The multi-dimensional movement of Pilates especially on Pilates apparatus wakes up dormant areas of the body, yielding a body that is more alive, alert and functional.

Toe Socks are better for your feet and your body. Wearing regular athletic socks draws your toes together, making them act as one unit. The purpose of our toes is to spread and anchor to the floor, helping the body balance and stay aligned. When your toes spread, blood circulation increases and other muscles up the kinetic chain become active, promoting foot health and full-body support.

CoreFocused of Hollis, NH now carries the toesox® line in a variety of colors and sizes - a perfect companion to Pilates. Refer to toesox's web page:

Jody Secules of CoreFocused enjoyed participating in an Athletic conditioning on the V2 Max Plus Reformer workshop with STOTT PILATES Master Instructor Trainer PJ O'Clair. PJ made a good observation, " Most athletes are tight and stuck in their sport." The closed chain, highly proprioceptive exercise possibilities on the V2 Max Plus reformer allow athletes as well as non-athletes to find their stabilizer muscles while getting a great workout, addressing the whole body, not just one part of it. CoreFocused offers training on the V2 Max Plus Reformer as well as the whole suite of Pilates apparatus and mat offerings.

January 2008 Jody Secules attended a 3 day workshop with Aaron Mattes on his Active Isolated Stretching Method and Assisted Isolated Stretching method that yields profound results. Over the past 35 years Aaron Mattes has been refining a muscle specific stretching method that incorporates no more than a 2 second stretch and release and 10 repetitions. During each 2 second stretch each specific muscle & related fascia stretches without the stretch reflex triggering a constriction of blood flood and progress. With each gradual stretch, the range of the joint increases, pathways are opened, nourishing the muscles with blood & oxygen, wastes are removed, healing is enhanced with regards to rehab. This type of stretching method can be utilized before or after cardiovascular activity. Active isolated stretching enhances a Pilates workout. Full range of joints - Flexibility & Stability with Strength means optimal power in sports. Increased range of joints in regards to rehab plus a strength component means improved quality of life. Active Isolated Stretching & Pilates are methods of increasing power in sports as well as improving quality of Life with regards to rehabilitation.
